A meticulously crafted 10-minute online exercise regimen has demonstrated the potential to induce minor yet significant reductions in depressive symptoms.

This constitutes the principal outcome detailed in my team’s scholarly publication, featured in the esteemed journal, Nature Human Behaviour.

A prevalent misconception suggests that initiating the journey toward overcoming depression necessitates professional therapeutic intervention, pharmaceutical treatment, or a drastic alteration of one’s surroundings. Conversely, our investigation substantiates that engaging in incremental efforts to acquire practical competencies can yield discernible enhancements in the manifestation of depressive symptoms.

In the year 2024, my colleagues and I initiated a social media campaign to solicit insights from the mental health community. The central query posed was as follows: If you were granted the opportunity to engage 500 individuals grappling with depression for a mere 10 minutes, how would you optimally allocate that limited temporal resource?

We garnered a substantial 66 contributions from a diverse international cohort, encompassing academics, developers of mental wellness applications, prominent figures in the YouTube sphere, and students.

From these submissions, we judiciously selected the 12 most promising candidates for subsequent development and thorough evaluation within one of the most extensive randomized controlled trials ever undertaken for mental health interventions.

These 12 distinct “single-session interventions” represented a broad spectrum of approaches. Some drew upon scientifically validated methodologies originating from in-person psychotherapy, while others were entirely novel in their conceptualization.

One particular intervention employed an expressive writing exercise powered by generative artificial intelligence. Another repurpose an emotionally resonant advertisement from Thai Life Insurance, illustrating how altruistic acts, however small, can imbue life with greater meaning.

This Thai life insurance advertisement, championing the principle of “believing in good,” achieved widespread virality and served as the foundation for an effective depression management program.

Each intervention was designed to be completed in under 10 minutes and was entirely self-administered.

Within the framework of the study, 7,505 adult participants residing in the United States were randomly allocated to either engage with one of the 12 single-session interventions or a control condition focused on acquiring knowledge about trout.

Participants were surveyed regarding their psychological well-being immediately following the completion of their assigned intervention and again after a one-month interval. Critically, each participant undertook the intervention (or control activity) on a singular occasion.

The immediate aftermath of nearly all interventions saw participants reporting feelings of hopefulness and motivation to enact positive changes. However, after the one-month follow-up period, only two interventions—namely, Interactive Cognitive Reappraisal and Finding Focus—demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in depression.

The observed improvements over the month-long duration were modest on average, reflecting approximately a 4% greater amelioration on a standardized depression scale for the top two exercises compared to the control group. Nevertheless, even such incremental average effects can yield substantial real-world benefits, particularly given the inherent scalability and accessibility of these programs due to their complimentary and brief nature, allowing for widespread global reach.

Significance of the Findings

Depression represents a formidable global health challenge, impacting an estimated 332 million individuals annually worldwide. While established therapeutic modalities, such as psychotherapy, have proven efficacy, sustained professional engagement remains an unachievable goal for the majority of the affected population owing to significant obstacles, including but not limited to insufficient access, prohibitive costs, and the pervasiveness of societal stigma.

Our research marks the inaugural demonstration that single-session interventions can precipitate sustained reductions in depressive symptoms among adults over a month-long period.

The underlying objective of my team’s investigation into single-session interventions is straightforward: by distilling the essential components of effective psychological treatments into concise, user-friendly formats, we aim to significantly broaden access to evidence-based support for individuals in need.

The ultimate goal is not to supplant the roles of therapists or psychiatrists, but rather to provide a viable and accessible resource for individuals who might otherwise be deprived of any form of support. Furthermore, interventions of a single-session nature can serve as valuable adjuncts to conventional therapies, offering a beneficial option for those awaiting scheduled appointments with mental health professionals.

Future Directions

Having successfully identified single-session interventions capable of mitigating depressive symptoms, our paramount imperative is to disseminate information regarding the availability of these evidence-based, concise mental wellness resources, accessible online without charge.

For instance, Koko, the organization behind the most impactful intervention identified in our study, has developed a suite of free five- to 10-minute interventions designed to address a spectrum of mental health challenges.

Additionally, you have the opportunity to personally experience all 12 single-session interventions that were subjected to our testing protocols. Our published paper offers more detailed insights into the effectiveness of each individual intervention.

My research group is actively engaged in ongoing exploration of single-session interventions and their practical deployment across diverse settings, including social media platforms, educational institutions, and clinical waiting lists. Our collaborators are concurrently investigating the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in enhancing the engagement and personalization of single-session interventions to meet individual user requirements.

For a significant portion of individuals, the debilitating effects of depression can render the prospect of regaining control over their thoughts and emotions seemingly unattainable. This study unequivocally demonstrates that dedicating as little as 10 minutes to learning evidence-based coping mechanisms can serve as a crucial and empowering initial stride toward sustained well-being.
