Myanmar’s Colossal Ruby: An 11,000-Carat Treasure Beyond Measure

A substantial ruby, weighing an impressive 11,000 carats, has been unearthed in Myanmar, as reported by state-affiliated media on Friday. This discovery ranks among the most significant ever recorded in the nation, which is celebrated globally for its exceptional precious gemstones.

Images featured on the front page of the state-operated publication, the Global New Light of Myanmar, depicted the coup leader, who has since assumed the presidency, Min Aung Hlaing, examining the colossal gemstone, which tips the scales at 2.2 kilograms (4.8 pounds), within his official office.

Originating from the renowned Mogok region, the ruby was characterized by the newly established military-backed administration in a formal declaration as being “exceptionally substantial, exceptionally rare, and exceedingly challenging to locate.”

“The immense ruby exhibits a purplish-red hue interspersed with subtle yellowish undertones, and it is esteemed for possessing a color grade of superior quality,” the statement further elaborated.

Although it falls short in size compared to a comparable 21,450-carat ruby uncovered in the identical locale in 1996, the more recently found specimen is considered to hold greater monetary worth. This valuation is attributed to its “superior coloration, inherent clarity, and overall elevated quality,” according to the governmental report, which did not disclose a specific financial figure.

Historically, the valley of Mogok, located in the Mandalay region, has been a focal point of contention, with emperors, monarchs, and military leaders vying for control over its territory, where the distinctive “pigeon-blood” rubies are concealed.

Rubies originating from Mogok are recognized as the most costly globally, with gemstones of the highest caliber commanding prices in the millions of dollars within an industry notoriously lacking in regulatory oversight.

Myanmar has been under the governance of a military junta since a 2021 coup d’état precipitated a civil conflict. However, the former military commander, Min Aung Hlaing, was formally inaugurated as the civilian president last month, following an election characterized by stringent limitations.
